Celebrating 29 yrs clean and sober on Cinco de Mayo…not like i knew what day it was in 1984 Cuartro de Mayo~!! Ha, and that’s a long time in between Margarita’s….not to mention crack and smack. Today I feel like the strongest ‘Vhooman in the Village.’

Michael Crichton came to my salon in 1972. Years later, Michael told me the title of his latest book ‘Jurassic Park’ when I was cutting his hair…I asked him, “Is that in London?” He was always fun, kind and mostly patient with me til his end. #Born Yesterday. I miss his everyday.

Hi Carrie, WOW what a book! And what a life! I finished your memoir in three sittings. You not
only survived….you thrived, and lived to tell the story. You look so young and fabulous that
it’s hard to believe you lived through this horrific journey. With your unflinching honesty
your turned this nightmare into a riveting cautionary tale.
With much affection, Lorna

Upper Cut is marvelous. I’ve been reading it in bits and pieces over the past two weeks…on the subway, at lunch at quiet restaurants, early in the morning… moments and places where I can get into Carrie White’s head….and live out her lively, glamorous, tortured, fun, horrific, and miraculous experience. Her upward driving ambition, the downward spiral of her addiction, and the grace of her recovery make this one of the most rich and riveting biographies I’ve ever read.

I thought, “Do you really want to read an autobiography about a hairdresser”? (I want to also say that I only read biographies as I am fascinated in real stories about real folks). I wondered if this would be just celeb name-dropping, or gossipy tidbits.

Instead I found a book about a woman who has endured so much. From a childhood wrought with abuse, uncertainty, giving up a baby, alcoholism, drug addiction. Who through it all, finds the self-determination, & confidence to go out there and become a sought-after hairdresser in the “genesis” days of the “hairdresser-as-rockstar”.

Her story is amazing! She candidly talks of the frenzy of the drug scene she is part of. She frankly opens her life, it can’t be easy for her to relive some of the pain, and (obviously) shame of many choices. You see as a reader, she didn’t have a choice, she had a disease. This horrible disease of alcoholism, and she does not sugar coat anything.

I cried, laughed, and at times I was angry. I am amazed that not only did she survive, but MY GOD! She looks absolutely amazing! Oh, and yes, there were plenty of juicy tidbits about the rich and famous as well!

She is an amazing testament to the human spirit. I recommend this book like crazy!
